Carl’s Journey - From debilitating disability to pushing the limits
Carl had been referred to Tracks&Dales through Kendal Primary Care Network. Carl had been supported by their wellbeing team for many months and was slowly improving his mental health.
For context, Carl has a disability called ‘congenital talipes equinovarus’, more commonly known as clubfoot. This has meant Carl has suffered immensely with his physical health, which in turn, has lead to mental health struggles.
On top of this, Carl has recently lost his mum who he was very close to, which left him having to move home and live in isolation.
Carl became depressed, and covered this by overeating and not exercising. However, one day, Carl thought: ‘screw it!’ and decided to change things. Since then, Carl has been exercising more and pushing through the constant pain he is going through with his clubfoot through shear determination and lots of painkillers. This has led to weight loss, an improved confidence and much better mental health.
Carl used to not be able to walk more than half an hour without having to rest for days afterwards to recover. Now, Carl is walking up to 2.5 hours a day! This is all down to the physio he does, gym sessions five times a week and walks once a day.
Tracks&Dales have been able to support Carl through 1-1 support throughout 2026, getting to places he never thought possible such as Whitbarrow Scar, Gurnal Dubbs and Brant Fell.
The plan is to continue pushing these limits through more 1-1 support, but also group sessions to help with social skills and inclusivity.
Carl, you are incredible!
